Lake sediments can provide valuable insights into anthropogenic disturbances such as intensive aquaculture and land use changes. These disturbances often manifest as elevated levels of nutrients and elements within the sediments. This paper uses several analytical techniques, i.e., FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), and SEM (scanning electron microscopy), to examine the elemental constituents of lake sediments, along with their relative mineral abundances and surface morphology. The selected freshwater lakes are from the Central Gangetic Plain. The analysis provides a "fingerprint" of geogenic and biogenic mineral constituents of the sediments. Physicochemical, mineralogical, and elemental analysis shows that intensive aquaculture activities in lake alter the sediment chemistry as evidenced by the increase in pH, organic carbon, organic matter, and total phosphorus which is not observed in the lake where aquaculture is prohibited. Freshwater lake sediment is characterized by a high content of biogenic silica and carbonate minerals. The variations in sediment nutrients and mineral fluxes of the selected lakes are mainly attributed to diverse anthropogenic pressures, differences in lake productivity, and the overall ecological condition of the lakes. In the selected three lakes, major variation was reported in the autochthonous sediments in comparison to the allochthonous sediments. The study concludes that catchment and biotic deposit variations in the lakes cannot be evened out by in-lake mixing mechanisms due to variations in the terrigenous and pelagic deposits of the lake. The results highlight the importance of studying annual fluctuations and spatial variations in geogenic and biogenic mineral particle fluxes in lakes. Such investigations provide valuable insights into the annual dynamics of minerals within lakes, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of their behavior and distribution.

Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) 2017 Clinical Practice Guideline has recommended treatment decisions for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) with osteoporosis and/or high risk of fracture. Bisphosphonates, the first-line anti-osteoporosis drugs have the concern of worsening kidney functions. Moreover, despite impaired bone formation in CKD patients, teriparatide, the formation-stimulating drug is not recommended. Thus, there is an urgent need for safe and effective treatment of osteoporosis in CKD patients. Here, in CKD rats, we tested the osteoprotective effect of diosmin, a citrus-derived bioflavonoid used as a phlebotonic in chronic venous insufficiency and has a renoprotective effect. CKD was developed by 5/6th nephrectomy and diosmin at the human equivalent dose (100 mg kg-1) did not advance renal failure but reduced blood pressure to the level of sham control. Fibroblast growth factor-23 and parathyroid hormone were increased in CKD and diosmin suppressed both. CKD reduced bone mass and deteriorated the microarchitecture of trabecular bones, and diosmin maintained both to control levels. Bone formation and strength were impaired in the CKD and diosmin maintained these levels to control levels. Nanoindentation of bone showed that diosmin significantly increased tissue hardness over the control. Diosmetin, the metabolic surrogate of diosmin had comparable pharmacokinetic profiles between the control and CKD groups. Furthermore, diosmetin (50 mg kg-1) protected against CKD-induced bone loss. These data suggest that diosmin and its metabolic surrogate, diosmetin protect against CKD-induced osteopenia. Since diosmin has no renal adverse effect and protected bone mass and strength in CKD rats, we propose assessing its anti-osteoporosis effect in CKD patients.

Eight constructed wetland microcosm (CWM) units have been designed using three macrophytes for domestic wastewater treatment. The main aim of this study is to evaluate enzyme activities with respect to time and soil depth and their correlation with removal efficiency of pollutants within different CWM units. The findings of this study show that the activity of enzymes and pollutants removal efficiency vary to a great extent on the soil depth, time of the sampling and type of pollutants. The correlation between removal of soluble reactive phosphorus and total phosphorus was significant with phosphatase activity in most of the CWM units. Activity of urease and NH4+-N removal was positively correlated with significant positive correlation in CWM units planted with Phragmites karka, and Pistia stratiotes (Ph + Pi) and Typha latifolia, Phragmites karka and Pistia stratiotes (T + Ph + Pi). Urease activity was found to be both positively and negatively correlated with respect to removal of NO3--N and NO2--N in different CWM units. Dehydrogenase activity showed negative correlation with respect to biological oxygen demand (BOD) removal except in CWM units with Ph + Pi and T + Ph + Pi. Similarly, a moderate positive and negative correlation exists between fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis and BOD removal. Removal of BOD and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) was negatively correlated with each other in most of the CWM units. With respect to vertical variation, the top layer of CWM units expressed significantly higher activity of extracellular enzymes and were significantly different from the deeper layer. CWM units exhibited significant variations in enzyme activity with respect to time.

RESUMEN

Serine racemase (SR) converts the free form of L-serine into D-serine (DS) in the mammalian brain. The DS functions as a co-agonist of N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. The over- activation of NMDA receptor leads to many neurological disorders like stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and an effective inhibitor of SR could be a corrective method for the receptor over-activation. We report for the first time here a rapid way of purifying and identifying an inhibitor from medicinal plants known to have the neuro-protective effect. We have purified SR inhibitor from the methanolic extract of Centella asiatica by affinity method. High resolution mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy were used to identify the ligand to be madecassoside. We have shown the madecassoside binding in silico and its inhibition of recombinant human serine racemase in vitro and ex vivo.

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a major legume crop grown in a semi-arid climate in Western Canada, where heat stress affects pollination, seed set and yield. Seed set and pod growth characteristics, along with in vitro percentage pollen germination, pollen tube growth and pollen surface composition, were measured in two pea cultivars (CDC Golden and CDC Sage) subjected to five maximum temperature regimes ranging from 24 to 36 °C. Heat stress reduced percentage pollen germination, pollen tube length, pod length, seed number per pod, and the seed-ovule ratio. Percentage pollen germination of CDC Sage was greater than CDC Golden at 36 °C. No visible morphological differences in pollen grains or the pollen surface were observed between the heat and control-treated pea. However, pollen wall (intine) thickness increased due to heat stress. Mid-infrared attenuated total reflectance (MIR-ATR) spectra revealed that the chemical composition (lipid, proteins and carbohydrates) of each cultivar's pollen grains responded differently to heat stress. The lipid region of the pollen coat and exine of CDC Sage was more stable compared with CDC Golden at 36 °C. Secondary derivatives of ATR spectra indicated the presence of two lipid types, with different amounts present in pollen grains from each cultivar.
